Quando il marmo di Carrara non diventa opera d'arte. - When the marble of Carrara becomes a work of art.
Non sempre il marmo e sopratutto un marmo così famoso, come quello di Carrara, diventa una opera d'arte. Anzi lo diventa sempre meno. Infatti il marmo "statuario" di Carrara - Toscana, diventato famoso perchè i geni dell'arte di sempre: Donatello, Michelangelo , Bernini, Canova, lo utilizzavano per creare le loro opere. Non solo, grandi opere architettoniche del passato, come il Pantheon a Roma o le cattedrali di Siena e Firenze, sono state utilizzando il marmo di Carrara. Persino per costruire a Londra ed a Washington i palazzi del potere, è stato utilizzato questo marmo. Pensate solo alla Pietà del Vaticano, è stata creata, dal Michelangelo ventenne, utilizzando un blocco di puro marmo di Carrara. Il marmo delle Alpi Apuane viene utilizzato dall'uomo, per la prima volta, addirittura in epoca del rame. Veniva utilizzato per costruire utensili. Ma è in epoca romana, dal I° Secolo A.C., che viene utilizzato in modo intenso, per costruire le città imperiali e le opere che avrebbero dovuto dimostrare la potenza di Roma. Da allora l'utilizzo del marmo di Carrara ha sempre sottolineato le opere di maggiore ingegno dell'uomo, le sculture di maggiore interesse artistico (pensiamo a Moore) hanno avuto, come supporto , il marmo di Carrara. Il marmo non è una pietra, ma è il risultato di una sedimentazione dovuta a miliardi di microscopici molluschi marini, i loro gusci, in milioni di anni, hanno creato le Alpi Apuane, diventati montagne dopo sconvolgimenti tellurici. Queste montagne sono quindi un unico sistema ambientale a livello mondiale. Ma purtroppo la loro unicità è diventata anche la loro maledizione, infatti il carbonato di calcio, di cui sono formate, è diventato un affare per decine di speculatori senza scrupoli. Infatti oggi le cave di marmo stanno distruggendo le Apuane. Mentre sino a 100 anni fa si arrivava al massimo ad estrarre 120 mila tonnellate di marmo all'anno, oggi si estraggono sino a 5 milioni di tonnellate all'anno. Un vero disastro ambientale, e tra l'altro questo disastro avviene con la complicità delle Amministrazioni pubbliche, che lo avallano. Ma il peggio è che questo marmo solo per il 20% viene utilizzato per l'architettura o per creare opere d'arte, mentre l' 80% viene utilizzato polverizzato, come carbonato di calcio, per scopi industriali. Il prezioso marmo di Carrara diventa elemento base per l'industria alimentare (anche nel pane) e cosmetica, nei dentifrici, nei detersivi (come sbiancante), negli altoforni per l'acciaio e così via. Uno dei marmi più preziosi al mondo viene sprecato per bassi scopi industriali. Oggi il marmo bianco "statuario" e il bardiglio di Carrara non diventano più opere d'arte, ma polvere.
