Quando le ombre scendono al Tartaro, il cui ingresso principale si trova in un bosco di bianchi pioppi presso il fiume Oceano, ciascuna di esse è munita di una moneta, che i parenti le hanno posto sotto la lingua. Possono così pagare Caronte, il tristo nocchiero che guida la barca al di là dello Stige.
Nella prima zona del Tartaro si trova la triste Prateria degli Asfodeli, dove le anime degli eroi vagano senza meta tra la turba dei morti meno illustri che svolazzano qua e là come pipistrelli, e dove soltanto Orione ha ancora cuore di cacciare ombre di daini. Ciascuna di loro preferirebbe vivere come servo di un umile contadino anziché soggiornare come sovrano nel Tartaro. Unico loro piacere è bere il sangue delle libagioni offerte dai vivi: poi si sentono ancora uomini, almeno in parte.

Each of them would prefer to live as a servant of a humble farmer as ruler rather than stay in Tartarus. Their only pleasure is drinking the blood of libations offered by the living: then feel even men, at least in part.
