Il mito olimpico della creazione
All'inizio di tutte le cose, la Madre Terra emerse dal Caos e generò nel sonno suo figlio Urano. Dall'alto delle montagne Urano guardò la dea con occhio amoroso e versò piogge feconde nelle sue pieghe segrete, ed essa generò l'erba, alberi e fiori, unitamente alle belve e agli uccelli. Quelle stesse piogge feceron poi scorrere i fiumi e colmarono d'acqua i bacini, e così si formarono laghi e mari.
Urano generò i Titani dalla Madre terra dopo avere cacciato i Ciclopi, suoi figli ribelli, nel remoto Tartaro, un sinistro luogo che dista dalla terra quanto la terra dista dal cielo. Un'incudine di ferro precipita per nove giorni prima di toccarne il fondo. Per vendicarsi la Madre terra indusse i Titani ad assalire il padre loro; e così essi fecero, guidati da Crono, il più giovane dei sette che si era armato di un falcetto di selce. Colsero Urano nel sonno e Crono spetatamente lo castrò col falcetto....
Crono sposò sua sorella Rea, cui è sacra la quercia. Ma era stato profetizzato sia dalla Madre Terra, sia da Urano morente, che uno dei figli di Crono l'avrebbe detronizzato.Ogni anno, dunque, egli divorava i figli generati da Rea: prima Estia, poi Demetra ed Era, poi Ade ed infine Posidone.

At the beginning of all things Mother Earth emerged from Chaos and gave birth to her son Uranus in your sleep. Uranus looked down from the mountains with a loving eye, and the goddess poured rain fruitful in its secret folds, and she gave birth to the grass, trees and flowers, together with the beasts and birds. Those same rains made the rivers flow, and then filled up with water basins, and so formed lakes and seas.
Uranus fathered the Titans from Mother Earth after having driven out the Cyclops, his rebellious children, in the remote Tartarus, a place that is left from the earth because the earth is from heaven. Anvil of iron precipitates for nine days before touching the bottom. Mother Earth to take revenge led the Titans to attack their father, and so did they, led by Kronos, the youngest of seven who was armed with a sickle of flint. Uranus caught in his sleep and with a sickle Cronus castrated him mercilessly ....
Kronos married his sister Rhea, which is sacred oak. But both had been prophesied by Mother Earth, is dying from Uranus, one of the sons of Kronos would have driven from the throne. Each year, therefore, he devoured the children generated by Rhea: Hestia first, then Demeter and Hera, Hades, then and then Poseidon.
