Si torna a parlare dell'arte romana nel nord africa nel periodo imperiale, dopo la conquista di Cartagine (siamo nel III secolo d.C.), e del grande livello raggiunto dagli artisti. In quella regione, ormai Roma a tutti gli effetti, i romani creano insediamenti che devono affermare la grandezza dell'impero. Il nord africa acquista importanza strategica notevole, sia perchè diventa granaio per Roma sia perchè serve ad affermare il controllo del Mediterraneo. Le opere visibili oggi dimostrano tali affermazioni.
