Già dall'epoca del neolitico, o bronzo antico, popolazioni nomadi arrivano nel nord africa provenienti dal mare. Si installano in una zona estesa che va dall' atlantico sino alla Libia. Pare che siano gli antenati delle popolazioni berbere che ancora oggi vivono nelle zone desertiche sahariane. Viene chiamata la cultura troglodita perchè viveva nelle grotte scavate nella pietra arenaria. Ma la cosa più interessante è che dopo millenni ancora oggi i discendenti di quella popolazione vivono nelle stesse grotte. Alcune di queste sono in Tunisia, nella zona sud occidentale e, malgrado la situazione apparentemente "non civile", gli abitanti di questi siti vivono benissimo, anche perchè in una zona così accidentata e spesso caldissima si può vivere a temperatura costante di 20-25 gradi centigradi.
